Danmarks Nationalbank has closed the webshop for sale of coins and banknotes

On 1 December 2023, Danmarks Nationalbank closed the sale of coins and bank notes via the Royal Mint of Denmark’s webshop. In line with the Danish Sale of Goods Act, there is a 2-year warranty on coins with defects purchased from the Royal Mint of Denmark.

At 12 noon on 1 December 2023, Danmarks Nationalbank closed the sale of coins and banknotes via the Royal Mint of Denmark’s webshop. The decision was made because demand in online sales had been declining in recent years.

Furthermore, the cost of producing coins for the webshop has gone up. This is because less cash is generally used in society, e.g. for payments in shops. This means there is less need to produce coins for general circulation in society. This makes it proportionately more expensive to produce new coins if their sole purpose is to support sales in the webshop. It is expensive because small procurements of new coins result in a higher unit price. In addition, there is handling and transport of the coins, which also become more expensive per coin for small deliveries.

Right of complaint

Sales made before the closure of the coin webshop on 1 December 2023 at 12 noon are subject to the defect rules of the Danish Sale of Goods Act. In line with the Danish Sale of Goods Act, there is a 2-year warranty on coins with defects purchased from the Royal Mint of Denmark.

If the coins are faulty or defective, the Royal Mint of Denmark will refund the shipping costs when the coins are returned if they have been sent by delivery (the Royal Mint of Denmark cannot accept shipments via collect shipping). Complaints must state the account number and the price of the product.

Coins going forward

Danmarks Nationalbank's task of issuing coins and notes for general circulation in society has not changed. Providing secure and efficient means of payment, including cash, remains one of Danmarks Nationalbank's key tasks.

The plan is also to continue producing commemorative coins for special occasions in the Royal House, such as the regent's birthdays and reign anniversaries. Information about upcoming coins and their distribution will be announced via the press or Danmarks Nationalbank's website.
