Danmarks Nationalbank closes webshop for sales of coins and banknotes.
The web shop will cease trading at 12:00 noon on friday, 1 december 2023
Danmarks Nationalbank will close its coin webshop at the end of the year due to declining sales figures and rising costs.
Danmarks Nationalbank has decided to close the Royal Danish Mint’s webshop, which sells annual coin sets. The decision has been made due to declining sales figures in the webshop and higher costs for production of coins for the webshop.
Danmarks Nationalbank’s task of issuing coins and banknotes for general circulation in society remains unchanged. It is still one of Danmarks Nationalbank’s core tasks to ensure secure and efficient means of payment, including cash.
In recent years, there has been decreasing demand for the products sold via the webshop, while it has also become more expensive to produce coins for the webshop.
The reason is that there is generally less use of cash in society, for example for payments in stores. Therefore, there is also less need to produce new coins for general circulation in society, making it proportionately more expensive to produce new coins if their sole purpose is to support sales in the webshop. It is expensive because small procurements of new coins result in a higher unit price. Added to this are handling and transport of the coins, which also become more expensive per coin for small-scale deliveries.
The plan is to continue the production of commemorative coins in connection with special occasions in the Royal Family, such as the sovereign’s round birthdays and jubilees.
